More on how the Atkins diet works, and the relationship with peptide YY
came from The Economist print edition and discusses how the peptide YY may play a role in the effectiveness of the Atkins diet. The article points out in its outset that the main reason Atkins works is due to appetite suppression and not ketosis, which I already knew from a medical journal article my wife, who is a doctor, gave me last year.
But this peptide YY thing sounds interesting. Apparently it's a hunger-regulating hormone that is released in higher concentrations after a meal high in protein, and the study quoted in the linked article appears to demonstrate that hunger is suppressed with the introduction of this peptide YY.

I wanted to share a low-carb snack.
I found Greek yogurt, Krinos, with 2 carbs per serving, and 3gs of fat. A serving is 3 tablespoons, which isn't much, but this stuff is very flavorful and wonderfully tart. I used to eat yogurt most every day, until I started Atkins, and I miss it. Or I did, until now. Yum.

So, yesterday morning, I weighed myself, and i was down to 119. My long-term goal was 120. So, I guess since I'm one pound below that goal, I'm officially in phase 3? (Phase 3 is the South Beach Diet term for the maintence phase, for those of you unfamiliar with the plan.)
But I have no idea what that means. It's all a really scary concept. I'm not sure I've lost enough, I know I don't want to gain, and I'm not sure what exactly to change to be "maintaining" rather than "dieting". I mean, phase 3 is basically the same as phase 2...just with the frame of mind to let yourself 'live life' and have that treat sometimes, right?
(but isn't that sorta what phase 2 is?)
and how do you know when you really are at your ideal weight?
i know I'm probably coming off as pretty neurotic..but this is a really weird mental place for me. i was literally overweight since i was a toddler. i have no concept or frame of reference for being at a weight i want to keep, lol.
i took those before/after shots, i celebrated with a glass of merlot and a new pair of jeans...i just don't know what comes next. or if next is pretty much the same as now :)

Hi everyone! :-)
I have a question about vitamins. I been on the Atkins diet since May of last year (and am close to 100 pounds lighter!). I take Centrum's Carb Assist vitamins daily. But, I have been noticing a huge problem with my menstrual cycle. I have terrible cramps, that i never had before going on this diet, and after extensive research it seems I possibly have a vitamin B deficiency. I was hoping to avoid such problems by taking the multivitamins daily, but seems as though they aren't helping in that area.
So my question is, what kind of vitamins/suppliments do you take? Current Mood: curious

i started this community when i started eating a lowcarb diet. for me it worked at first and then made me sicker and sicker. my doctor took me off the diet because he said it was dangerous for me. as i really have no use for the community, it's up for grabs. who wants to moderate?

My name is Amy and I am on day #2
of Atkins. I used to be very anti-atkins until my husband tried it and lost 40 pounds within a few months. So I decided that I would try as well. I am 5'0" and weigh about 130 pounds (really need to get a better scale). My goal weight is between 105-110 pounds by my brother's wedding, in which I am a bridesmaid, on October 16th. I'm not sure if I can lose 20-25 pounds by then, but I am sure going to try.
Day 1 for me was hard. I didn't have any cravings, but my muscles felt like they do after a strenous workout when you haven't exercised in years. I also had a mild headache all day. I went from eating around 800g of carbs a day to under 20 so that was a big shock to my system. Today being day 2 is the worst. My head is pounding, muscles still sore, feel somewhat lightheaded and disoriented, and very nauseated. Basically, like death. ;-) The only thing that is keeping me from giving up is knowing that because I feel the way that I do means it must be working. Hubby said he felt the same way and I should feel better in a week. I can't wait for that energy surge that I hear about. Well, that's about it!

Ok well. I'm basically 14, starting as a freshman in highschool, and I need to lose weight. Everyone I come across tells me that I don't need to lose a pound but I know they're wrong. I guess my stomach is the least of my worries. It's basically flat. But my thighs and my butt are such an issue! I feel gross even mentioning them. When I buy pants, I have to go 3 sizes too big for my waist, just to fit my "problem areas". In skirts/dresses I wear size 0 in juniors when I wear size 4/6 in pants. It's HORRIBLE. I've did the atkins for 2 weeks, and I lost 10lbs. But, I gave in and within a week off of it I gained it all back. I play Field Hockey and pre-season has just started so i'm going to be getting excersize. I played last year two but it didn't help my problem areas whatsoever! It has been suggested that it's just the way i'm built, but I refuse to believe that. I need MAJOR
